Final Essay

When I first heard about the final project I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I decided to base my final project on the contest, SuperUnknown. This is a ski competition in where you film the whole season and then put together a sponsor me video at the end. So I had my idea but I really did not know where to start.

My first step was obviously to start filming the whole ski season. During this time I really studied how professionals got their shots and how to make them look good. I really tried bringing a creative side to skiing in which the way I filmed. Each time I went out to start filming for my final project I took a lot of time before to plan out what I was going to do, and how I envisioned it to look. At this point in the project I was not only filming skiing. I wanted the video to have more. I went out and started filming life style shots to bring a unique vibe to my video. As I was filming through out the season I was constantly thinking how I wanted this video to turn out, and which song I was going to use.

As the season went by I felt like I was accumulating a lot of good shots. I was capturing a lot of new trickes and they were coming out solid. As I was having one of the best season of my life, it was cut short by a fall. I had twisted my ankle so badly that I had gotten bone chips. So this is when I started the creative process of editing my video.

I was new to editing so I had to teach myself everything that was available in the program. This in itself was a creative process. My first step was to get all of my footage onto the computer. This took me several hours just going through the footage and making clips of the shots that were usable. The second step was to start making a time line of all the clips and how I wanted them to be arranged. I knew something was missing and I did not want to start editing until I had a song to edit it to. Once I had the song it all started to seem to come together. This was where a lot of my creativeness came through. I was constantly moving and cutting up clips to make it flow better and go to the beat of the song. I was never happy with how it came out. I was always in the library working hard trying to make the video how I intended it to be. Finally the timeline was done. I was super pumped on how it came out and I was very proud of it. After all this I knew something was missing. I decided to have a quick intro and a longer outro. I also decided to put my season ending fall at the very end to put in exclamation point on the video.

This project was a very helpful exercise of the creative process. I worked very hard and long on this project in which I am very proud of. I had to constantly think of new ideas and ways to make this video come out how I wanted it to. This video would not have been possible if I did not use creative process.

Final Project Summary

These videos help show the creative process I went through to get to the final piece. At first I started with the raw footage and tried arranging them into some type of timeline, also the quality was horrible. Then I added a song and started to cut up and edit clips to help fit the song. The third video is almost the finished project. The quality is lower than I wanted and a few clips did not match up to the song. I went back in and started to make sure certain things happened at certain times so clips would go with the beats of the song. For my final piece I created an intro and outro and made the quality a lot better. I choose this video to create for my final project because a video has to go through tons of creative changes to get to the final piece. This video is a spin off of the ski contest, Super Unknown. I made what I thought would be a good entry for this contest if I entered.

Final Project Picture

This is a picture of the Super-unknown contest that is held each year. What this competition does is try to bring out an up and coming star from the ski community. What you do is film the whole year and then put together a segment which people vote on. Whoever wins this comp basically becomes instantly pro, and all the sponsors you could want. I am basing my final project on this comp. I have made a video as if I was entering this comp.

Essay

In life we always ask the questions what is right, or what is good. Often our first reaction to any event is not the same as when you look back at it. These questions are always around us and always present. When we look deeply into an event that has happened and try answering these questions you will be surprised with what you come up with.

In my slide show I tried getting the point across of what is good, and what is right. I tried showing that great people have died for a causes to make the world a better place. When you see Martin Luther King's picture, the first thing that comes to your mind is how he was assassinated. This was a horrible event and should have never happened. But when you apply these questions to this event, even how horrific it was, there can be some light coming from it. What is true is that Martin Luther King died to make things better, even though it was not his choice. His death brought the civil rights movement forward more than any ones words could have ever done. What is truth about this event is he died for a cause that may have never been resolved if he never had been killed. This does not excuse this horrible act of violence but it was almost necessary if the civil rights were to be won. His death was a tragedy which brought the nation together, and people finally realized what they were fighting over was just not worth it. That is the truth, and Martin Luther King was trying to do good.

Another great symbol during the Civil Rights Movement was John F. Kennedy. JFK was one of the most loved presidents of all time, and was tragically assassinated for his beliefs. What is truth about this event is that his words spread throughout the nation, and brought all races closer together than ever before. As everything seemed to be getting better, his life was cut short because of what he was trying to do. His death brought tears to the nation's eyes, and even though he was not around his words and beliefs were. JFK was another great human being trying to do good, and should have never been killed. But his death had just as big of an impact on the civil rights movement as his words did. Even though it is a tragic event his death did bring good, and that he will never be forgotten for.

In the past and in the present good and bad things are happening. What we should do as human beings is to ask questions. What is right, true, good. If we can find meanings of an event or a situation sometimes things are not so bad. Instead of always looking at the negatives, we need to look at the positives, and bring light out of a dark situation. Everything happens for a reason and we need to figure out as people what we have learned, and how we have grown for a certain event.

Pimp, Hack, Mod...Mash - Up

Pimp: This word describes altering something to make it look newer, or more fashionable. Pimping something out is normally used when fixing up cars, or other vehicles. it is a way to be different and innovative with your creation.

MOD: Is short for a modification. This is normally with electronics and it is to change the way the electronic functions. You can alter the way things appear and their function.

Mash - Up: This is when you combined two ideas into one. This can be when you take the best qualities of both and mash them up to make a better product. It can also be when you combined software and parts to fix something.

Hack: Is a way to change something when it is bad. When you hack something it is a way to make something better then it originally was. It can also mean you have gotten something that was not originally made for it.

Comic Strip Assignment

I really like this comic because there are no words in it, but you are able to fully understand what is going on. I think it is important that a comic strip should be able to be read visually and not only because of words. This illustrator did an excellent job of capturing a scene without using words. I also like the transitions from slide to slide because they also help tell the story. They are able to move the story along without interrupting the flow. They also help change from action to non action shots.

American Born Chinese pg. 161-234

On page 163 Jin convinces Wei-Chen to lie to his parents to make them believe he was studying instead of hanging out with Amelia. This passage shows how sometimes friends put each other in awkward situations and have to help even if they know it is not the right thing to do. I know that I have done this to my friends and I know now to do it as little as I can, because it is not fair to my friends.

On page 179 Jin is confronted by one of Amelia's friends. He asks Jin to do him a favor and to stay away from her because they are almost in high school and she needs to watch out who she hangs out with. This is a good example that people worry too much about what "click" they are in or who they are seen with. Everybody does it and I think it is just something that people need to grow out of and it is just a phase. Even though it would make things easier if people did not care what click they are with or who they are seen with.

On page 195 there is a great invisible passage leading to page 196. On 195 the pictures are dark and you can not see Jin at all. Something has happened to him but we do not know what. Then the light is turned on and you have to flip the page. The blank space lets your imagination run wild until you see what happened to him. When you flip the page you see that Jin now looks American.

The transition from page 233 to the end is great. On 233 there is a single picture showing Jin with another girl. This picture conveys happiness and when you turn the page the book is over. It is a perfect way to end the comic book.

American Born Chinese pg. 81-160

The passages on page 89 I think are worth bringing up. On this page Jin tries to express his feelings to Wei-Chen about the girl he cannot stop thinking about. Wei-Chen tells him he is a fool for liking a girl before he is 18, and then the next week Jin see's Wei-Chen dating a girl. I think this is a good passage to bring up because it shows how people can react to situations and how hypocritical people can be. Not only did Jin not get any advice from Wei-Chen, but now he can not feel like he can trust him. It is important to always keep your word and to have people be able to trust you.

Page 111 is a passage worth bringing up. In this passage the teacher is asking questions to the class and no one wants to answer. Then Chin-Kee answers the question and gets praise from the teacher. The teacher responds to the class saying, "It would behoove you all to be a little more like Chin-Kee."I feel like people should never say you should be more like somebody else. Everybody is there own person and no body should change that. There are better ways to get people involved or get your point across other than insulting their personality. How do you feel about this?

From page 105 to 106 is a great invisible passage. On 105 Jin gets the confidence to ask Amelia on a date. She responds to Jin and says yes. Then in big bubble letters the word YES comes out of her mouth and runs off the page and right onto the next page where Jin is sleeping. This running off the page of the letters is a great way to show that he was thinking about it all day right until he went to bed.

Another good invisible passage is from pages 109 to 110. On page 109 it shows their school and in big letters the word "Brrring!" which symbolizes the start of school. Then when you flip the page it shows the inside of the school and what goes on. From when you flip the first page the blank space makes the transition into the school. This is a good time to let your imagination set in before you see the next page.

This is my second edition of Cornell's Swan Lake. I tried focusing more on the beauty of skiing and turned the snow background into water. I did this because snow would not happen without water in the first place. I also feel that the blue background makes it more like Swan Lake.

American Born Chinese

On page 28 it reminds me of when I was a kid. The passage is about a few friends hanging out when they were young playing with toys and watching TV. It was like yesterday when me and my friends were playing with our JI Joe's and Tunka Trucks. I think this was also an important passage because it is showing that everyone around the world no matter where they are from are all alike. Then on page 77 to 78 it is trying to tell you to not lose yourself. I choose this passage because I feel that it is really important to remember. You should never forget who you are, and where you come from. My first invisible passage that I think is worth bringing up is between 78 and 79. This blank space tells us that the monkey has found himself. Without this blank space you would not be able to see the transition of the monkey's personality. My second invisible passage I picked was from page 72 to 73. This blank space shows the transition of how far the monkey actually traveled. He is flying through space then he is at the footsteps of the five golden pillars. Without this blank space you would not understand how the monkey ended up there.

This is an abstract interpretation of Cornell's Swan Lake. Like swans, skiing is very graceful and beautiful. The way the swan moves so elegant and freely can compare to how perfect skiers look flying through the air. Like birds, skiers are able to sore through sky and perform maneuvers and land back on the ground so graciously. I would like to go back and change the skier in the stripped shirt to a skier flying through the air.

Essay

A swan sits far back in a window, and seems to be sitting in water. It looks so beautiful as it arches it's neck towards it's body. The blue surrounding the swan seems to play the role of water. The swan sits alone like it is being watch by somebody. Within the blue that surrounds the swan there are many different layers to bring out images to make them seem more realistic. In the blue background carvings into the piece make up a house and trees that tower over the swan. The trees provide great shelter for the swan from the heat of the sun rays.

Outside of the middle piece there are swan feathers surrounding the inner most piece. This brings the piece of art to life. The yellow in the second layer makes the darker colors pop out at you, and makes the feathers look like they are golden. I think the feathers are a very important part in the piece. Maybe the swan lost it's feathers trying to flee from harm. Or maybe the swan plucked out these feathers making sure to keep clean and beautiful. These feathers are something tangible which really makes the piece real.

This piece of art makes me think that we need to leave nature alone. Taking something like the swan is so beautiful and we need to preserve our animals for all their beauty. There is a house in the background and it seems like the swan is loosing places to go. Or the people who built the house wanted to be in touch with nature. They had no intent to harm the swan and wanted to watch it in all it's beauty. They left enough land and water for this animal so it could be comfortable. Maybe within the house there is someone watching from a window of this creature in nature.

Just like the swan skiers also need nature to be left alone. As more and more development happens, skiers lose more terrain to ski. If there are no places left to ski, then the sport will die. If the swan has no where to live, then the swan will die. Both skiing and the swan are so acrobatic and athletic that they are both so awesome to watch.

We decided to have a Red Bull can to be our mascot because it was something we could all get our hands on. So I took out the original background of the Red Bull picture and put it into a jump I hit a few years back.
At first I wanted to rotate this second monster to be upright, but after I looked at it for a while I liked how it looked on it's side.
This is a monster I created using paint and a charcoal pencil.

Paper

As I walked into the art gallery I was amazed at all the things I saw. There was a huge piece of wood that looked like it was strapped to some sort of catapult. It made me think what it was used for and what the artist intended it to be. As I kept looking around the room I saw a lot of interesting things. There were huge quilts hanging on the wall that had incredible designs on them. I was just so amazed at the fact of how big they were and the colors they were able to put into them. The most interesting thing I saw in the gallery was the artists notes or sketch books. Not only was the work inside of them amazing and extremely detailed but the book itself was art. The covers were detailed and each cover had a different them or design on them. I was impressed that art can be found anywhere and not just inside a sketch book. The way the whole room was set up made all the art work stand out. Each art piece had it's own area that made each piece stand out from the rest. It was interesting to see how they did set everything up and that alone was also artistic. To be able to set up a room full of art work and not make it look clustered must have been a hard task to take on. The whole experience of walking through an art gallery was pretty cool. I have never really been to an art gallery and it gave me a good perspective of art. I was just amazed how you really can find art anywhere. It made me not so closed minded.

What is Creativity?

I think creativity is being inovative. Creating something that is all your own and new. I think creativity can also be redoing or changing someone else's work to make it your own. Creativity can be found in everything not just art work.
